Justin Lassen Interview – Trailer Music Vibe
Justin who? Well, hopefully by the time you finish reading this article, you’ll have a better idea of he really is. Composers are popping up all the time, and it was nice to speak with Mr. Lassen. Read on more in the following interview after the jump.
TMV: How did you come to be a composer?
Lassen: Ever since I could play the piano, I started composing melodies and whole songs at the age of 8 years old. It got progressively better as the years went on. I taught myself every instrument that I could get my hands on, and started to realize at a young age that I love strings, and I love soundtracks, particularly epic ones. It was when I first got a CASIO keyboard with soundfont technology in the early 90’s that I knew I wanted to be a composer. It wasn’t until mid 90’s when I started getting high profile composing gigs. Today I have a beautiful asenal of composing tools at my disposal, which help my dreams come to life. The rest as they say… is history.
TMV: Name a sound that you often associate with trailer music.
Lassen: sWoooooshhh… BANG, SLAMMM… BUMMMMMMM!! “IN A WORLD….” I can actually sound just like that guy, when I do an impression of that, or so says my friends and family.
TMV: Where do you derive inspiration?
Lassen: I am inspired by fairy tales, mythologies and creating worlds. When I’m working on a composition, i’m not just trying to fill a scene with music, I’m trying to figure out musically how the world itself sounds like, what instruments those imaginary characters listen to, what works best. I love figuring out how a new world feels through music. I find that mixing artwork and music helps and inspires me the best. For me, that is usually matte paintings and concept paintings from digital CG artists. Scenery and epic landscapes are my favorite sources of inspiration. I believe wholeheartedly that we are a product of our environment, I just choose to make my environments breathtaking, epic, atmospheric, I love to immerse myself completely in the lore, characters and environments of the project I’m working on.
TMV: Is there anything new in the works?
Lassen: At the moment, I’m working on a untitled project for the creator of The Walking Dead, which will include an epic metal soundtrack. I’m also working on a bunch of new remix work for new bands and artists coming out from different major labels, and sound design tools, plugins and epic libraries for composers and producers to use in their productions coming up. I just completed the factory patches for iZotope Iris, a new synthesizer for composers and sound designers around the world, which has been getting amazing reviews. I’m also producing a pop/dubstep artist in Seattle and an epic melodic metal band in Arizona amongst other things. Stay tuned. 🙂
Thanks to Mr. Lassen for taking the time to interview with Trailer Music Vibe!
